Located at the foot of the Euganean Hills, the Abbey of Praglia is a jewel of spirituality and Renaissance art, founded in the 11th century and still inhabited by a community of Benedictine monks. The complex impresses with the harmony of its four cloisters, among which the hanging cloister stands out, dominating the surrounding landscape with timeless grace. Inside the Basilica and the Monumental Refectory, valuable pictorial cycles can be admired, but it is the famous Monumental Library, with its precious volumes, that represents the intellectual heart of the monastery. The abbey is also known for its book restoration laboratory, one of the most important worldwide, where monks patiently preserve ancient manuscripts. Visiting Praglia means immersing yourself in an atmosphere of industrious silence, amidst the scent of apiary products and the elegance of architectures that celebrate the balance between man, faith, and nature.

Klosterladen (at the very back; Tip: honey, lavender) and museum (this is the way to the Klosterladen) open from 03/2026. Coffee and water can be purchased from a nun at the entrance door; refreshments can be enjoyed on the viewing terrace (seating for tired hikers). The bar, which is mentioned here in the tips, has been closed for years. But the monastery is worth a visit. Attention: opening hours depend on weekdays/holidays and are irregular.

The Colle del Montirone The monumental entrance designed by Jappelli testifies to the importance of this small hill, which was once rich in natural thermal springs that bubbled forth at a temperature of 80°C. Today, the stone pools can still be seen here, a symbol of the millennia-old thermal tradition of the town of Abano. The Doric column, topped with a chalice entwined by a serpent, was also designed by Giuseppe Jappelli in 1825, on the occasion of Emperor Franz I of Austria's visit. Abano Terme / According to Legend According to legend, the Greek hero Hercules and his heroic companions, with whom he had set out to defeat the giant Geryon, were revitalized after their heroic deed by the miraculous properties of this warm water. Drawn by the beauty of the hills, they decided never to return to Greece and to settle here. Because of the excellence of their lineage, the hills were called the "Euganean" Hills. The spring that had given the heroes such great refreshment was called "Aponon" in Greek. To right the wrong done to Geryon, Hercules himself built a temple in Abano in his honor and granted it the status of a true oracle. As Suetonius reports, this legend was well known in Roman antiquity; so it happened that Emperor Tiberius, on his journey to Illyria, wished to consult this famous oracle. He received a decisive answer: he should throw golden dice into the spring at the very spot where Abano now stands, to learn his fate. Legend has it that the dice made the water especially precious, bestowing upon it extraordinary healing properties for various ailments.
