Chiesa di Santa Maria La Nova – the hidden gothic gem of Cellino Attanasio Don't miss this impressive church. Chiesa di Santa Maria La Nova is the religious heart of Cellino Attanasio and is considered one of the most beautiful, hidden gothic churches in the province of Teramo. It's not for nothing that it's part of the tourist route La Valle delle Abbazie. Take your time to admire the magnificent gothic portal from 1424, with the family crest of the powerful Acquaviva family. The robust bell tower is also special: the lower floors were once a medieval defense tower. Inside, a rich baroque interior, a 14th-century paschal candle column, and the monumental tomb of a duke from the Acquaviva family await. Fun fact: the church was much larger in the Middle Ages than it is now. Originally, it probably had five naves, but after centuries of renovations and a partial collapse in 1826, the current, strikingly asymmetrical floor plan remained. It is precisely that special history that makes a visit extra special.

The complex is made up of the church and the annexed former Benedictine convent. The latter is now owned by a farm that produces quality wine, which has transformed the convent into a location for wine tasting and sales.
