During the Second World War, a gunpowder depot blew up and seriously damaged the facility. A subsequent landslide destroyed further parts. The facility was restored in 2001. Now it looks almost a bit too new, but the next few centuries will change that again :-)

The Aragonese castle of Ortona is not only a splendid monument but also an excellent panoramic point. From here you can admire the Trabocchi coast to the south and a beautiful stretch of the famous cycle path. Entry to the castle area is free and it's worth taking a tour just for how well maintained it is.

The seafront of Francavilla al Mare is perfect for walking and finding refreshment in one of the many restaurants present. The beach is eight kilometers long and is characterized by golden sand. During the Second World War, the city was totally destroyed, and therefore the city you see today is quite modern. It is the departure or arrival for the Costa dei Trabocchi cycle path, now a well-known destination in the world of cycling and cycle tourism.

The Aragonese castle of Ortona dates back to the 15th century. Initially it had defensive functions. From the seventeenth century, however, it became the residence of the Baglioni family. In the 19th century the castle fell into disrepair and was used as a powder magazine. Currently the castle can be visited for free: the views of the Adriatic Sea are exceptional.
