Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, it represents a masterpiece of the Italian garden with an impressive concentration of fountains, nymphaeums, caves, water features and hydraulic music.
Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, after the disappointments due to the lack of papal election, revived the splendor of the courts of Ferrara, Rome and Fointanebleau here and revived the magnificence of Villa Adriana.
Governor of Tivoli since 1550, he immediately toyed with the idea of creating a garden on the slope of the joyful valley, but only after 1560 the architectural and iconological program of the Villa was clarified, conceived by the painter-archaeologist-architect Pirro Ligorio and built by the architect of court Alberto Galvani. The palace was decorated by the protagonists of late Roman Mannerism.
The Villa was almost completed when Ippolito d’Este died in 1572. Further interventions in the seventeenth century followed a period of decline, until Cardinal Gustav Adolf von Hohenlohe revived its splendor by also hosting the musician Ferenc Liszt (1811-1886). Acquired by the Italian state, between the 1920s and 1930s the Villa was restored and opened to the public.

July 2, 2026, Temples of Vesta and Tiburnus

The Temple of Vesta is the best-known monument in Tivoli. The place where the Temple of Vesta stands is called the Acropolis of Tivoli and is located at the end of the nature trail of Villa Gregoriana. In the same place, there is also another Temple, rectangular in shape, known as the Temple of the Sibyl or of Tiburnus. In reality, the attribution of the temples is not precisely known because unfortunately the historical sources are not certain. According to some scholars, the temple we know today as the Temple of Vesta was actually a temple dedicated to Tiburnus, the founder of Tivoli. Many, however, are convinced that it was built for the Sibyl Albunea who, according to Christian mythology, was the one who predicted the arrival of Jesus. The same fate befell the rectangular temple, which is attributed either to Tiburnus or to the Sibyl.

"The Marcellina Gold Mine was strongly desired by the architect and photographer Romolo Belvedere and created by the Venezuelan artist Luis Gomez de Teran, known for his socially conscious works and who worked on the Marcellina Gold Mine using as the basis for the photographic reportage "The Faces of Stone", created by Belvedere himself in the mid-80s of the last century. The work is a permanent installation and has a dual value: it enhances a decidedly ugly and impactful industrial archeology site (occupies a large part of the mountain ridge) and becomes witness to a collective effort made of work and sacrifices, in which men and women, farmers, miners and shepherds were silent witnesses of an era now over, in which women like Teodora Fornari they were miners, mothers, wives and spent their whole lives in difficult working conditions (https://bussoladiario.com/2021/02/la-miniera-doro-di-marcellina.html)

One of the several singletracks inside the Reserve, you enter from the side of the motorway facing Mezzaluna to exit on the provincial road that connects Monterotondo with Castelchiodato. It does not require particular technical skills, the only precaution in autumn and winter is that the bottom can be slippery due to mud and fallen leaves

The Gregorian Bridge is made up of a single arch of 20 meters of light, it was built in place of the ancient waterfall, after the catastrophic flood of the Aniene (1826) and inaugurated by Pope Gregory XVI on 24 May 1835. It was destroyed in 1944 by retreating German troops and immediately rebuilt. Below it the flow of water has recently been reactivated, thus recalling the ancient image of the waterfalls, which can be enjoyed both from Piazza Rivarola itself, and even better, from the Castrovetere district facing it (Piazza delle Mole). From the same bridge, the stupendous scenery of the Roman acropolis with the two temples of Vesta and Sibilla can be appreciated. (http://www.tivolitouring.com/elenco/ponte-gregoriano)
