Sometimes referred to by the locals as "plague crosses," a few wayside shrine-like columns still survive in the landscape. Their true significance has been forgotten over the centuries, yet they are – for the most part – monuments marking the border between different areas of regional or local jurisdiction. In 1458, the Archbishop of Salzburg was also granted a small district court district by the sovereign around Seggau Castle and the market town of Leibnitz. This district court district extended in the north to the "Devil's Ditch" (on the border of the present-day communities of Lebring-St. Margarethen and Lang, or Gralla and Tillmitsch) and was marked by a mighty wayside shrine, the district court cross, which still stands today amidst gravel pits. The district courts were responsible for the death penalty for "maleficence crimes" such as robbery, murder, manslaughter, abortion and infanticide, rape, aggravated theft, witchcraft, sodomy and same-sex love, arson, lèse majesté, blasphemy, counterfeiting, and even notorious boundary violations. An arrested criminal had to be handed over by the apprehending authority (village, market, or town judge, or landowner) within three days, wearing only a belt, to a previously notified district judge at specific and appointed locations such as bridges, border trees, or wayside shrines. If the district judge did not appear at the appointed time, the criminal had to be released. In privileged district courts, the sentence was passed by the authorized criminal judge; in non-privileged district courts, the summoned ban judge. The sentence was carried out either on the local gallows or by the sword in a public square.
