Be extremely careful as the trails are not maintained. I was hiking around Vesuvio this july 2025 and it was quite an adventure borderline dangereous.

From here we understand how small the affairs of the world are compared to the immensity of nature.

The very panoramic itinerary allows you to enjoy the most suggestive and wild scenery of Somma-Vesuvius, crossing forest environments, scrubland up to bare lava rock. The starting point is located along the road that from the Medici Palace of Ottaviano continues towards the volcanic complex. A barrier prohibiting vehicular traffic marks the beginning of the route, the first stretch of the path, common with path no. 1, winds along asphalted hairpin bends, and then turns into a dirt path. The plant landscape consists initially of a thick pine forest of stone pine and then in a mesophilous forest, with essences such as chestnut, Neapolitan alder, Neapolitan maple, holm oak, black locust. Among the nesting birds, the minute lesser spotted woodpecker, rare and localized in Campania, has only recently colonized the Vesuvius Park. After more than 1 km of walking on a steep climb you reach Largo Angelo Prisco dedicated to the young financier murdered by poachers in 1995 which represents the closest destination. From the Largo, path no. 1 branches off to the left, while the itinerary continues on the right on a slight climb, entering, between twists and turns, into a shady chestnut grove where the numerous species of mushrooms present give off an intense and pleasant fragrance.

This building really stands out from the mass of houses in the village because of its battlements. I couldn't figure out why they were built, but I just thought the building was special. Perhaps someone can add to this.

Very suggestive and mysterious. Be very careful when entering because it would be unsafe, but you can also see the various rooms of the castle with the fireplaces and the cellars.

The Campania region, including areas accessible from Mariglianella, generally offers pleasant hiking conditions during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) when temperatures are milder. Summer can be very hot, especially on exposed trails, while winter might bring cooler temperatures and occasional rain, though many trails remain accessible.

When planning, look for shorter routes with less elevation gain, particularly in the forested areas or less strenuous sections of the national parks.
Mariglianella's strategic location provides access to these areas, but direct public transport links to specific trailheads might require transfers. For Vesuvius National Park, you would typically travel to a nearby town like Ercolano or Pompeii and then use local buses or taxis to reach the crater access points. For the Amalfi Coast, public transport usually involves buses from major hubs like Sorrento or Salerno. Planning ahead is recommended.
While many trails in the broader region are freely accessible, certain areas, especially within Vesuvius National Park, may require tickets or guided access to specific sections, such as the crater rim. For popular trails like the Path of the Gods on the Amalfi Coast, no specific hiking permit is generally required, but it's always advisable to check local regulations before your visit.
