The white mass limestones of the Middle Franconian Alb Formation (formerly the "Epsilon Mass Limestones") form the striking summit bastion of the Gelber Felsen near Schönhofen. At their base, the fossil and fossil-debris-rich limestone of the Velburg Horizon is exposed in places. The pale gray, bedded dolomites of the Pottenstein Formation interlock to the west with the mass dolomites of the Lower Franconian Alb Formation. Flat-shaped notches in the bedded dolomites trace the structures of the former squamosa sponges. This natural monument (according to the ND list, "the most beautiful and impressive rock formation in the district in the Jura region") is also a destination for climbing activities. People rarely visit the church. Next door in Penk is the Löweneck estate, which has a farm shop during the warmer months. There's a canoe rental in Penk.
