Kirchdorf is a municipality in the Baltic Sea resort of Poel Island. With 1,016 inhabitants (as of 2016), the harbor town is the largest town on Poel. Kirchdorf is located about eleven kilometers north of Wismar on the northern shore of Lake Kirchsee, a Baltic Sea bay that extends deep into the island of Poel. History The former fortress was built around 1620 according to plans by Ghert Evert Piloot. It featured a castle and a village church, and was surrounded by outbuildings. The complex was severely damaged during the Thirty Years' War and largely fell into disrepair by the 17th century. The buildings were documented by excavations in the 19th century and 1934. Some earthworks and ditches have been preserved. Sights The village church, located in the south of the village and built in the second half of the 13th century, is a historically significant landmark. For centuries, the 47-meter-high tower served as a landmark for ships entering the Bay of Wismar. The church is still partially surrounded by the remains of the ramparts of the former Poel Fortress, which, together with Walfisch Island, dominated and secured the Bay of Wismar and the harbor entrance to Wismar. There is an island museum in Kirchdorf. Source: Wikipedia
