Tips from the Community

Euphemia Anna 🌳
June 22, 2026, St. Anthony's Chapel, Nerdlen

The small Antonius Chapel, recorded on the map of the Daun office since 1683, is located in the village center. [...] After the fire in 1893, which claimed the entire village, it was rebuilt and consecrated in 1898. Unlike many other church bells, the chapel's bell was not melted down for cannons during the war years. However, an electric ringing system was only acquired at the end of the 70s from the proceeds of the first village festival. Previously, the bell had to be rung manually in the morning, at noon, and in the evening, which was taken over by the local families. Thus, one family was responsible for ringing for a whole year, until they were replaced by a new one in October. In the mid-90s, the small village chapel received a new coat of paint through the volunteer work of the FFW Nerdlen. Nerdlen belongs to the mother church and parish of Hilgerath. The so-called Struthdörfer, which belong to the parish, have a common cemetery at the Hilgerath church. Source (quoted literally): https://kulturdb.de/einobjekt.php?id=4709

Wonderful resting place with a beautiful view over wide meadows and fields. Nearby (at the "Eulenbrücke") cattle also grazed.

Each of these small sacred monuments, which one repeatedly encounters along the way – albeit in very differently designed versions – are not only signs of the death that Jesus Christ suffered for the believing Christian, but also of his resurrection from the dead. The promise also applies to us, that at the end of earthly life we will be called into an 'eternal life' by God, the Lord of heaven and earth. Of course, without us already knowing what this will look like in concrete terms. Perhaps a line of thought that Christiane Völkel has formulated as follows will help the hiker lingering before this cross – with the corpus of the crucified, i.e. a crucifix –: + “We can try to think that this moment is then life in its completed sense, in which we are overwhelmed by joy and this moment of joy lasts 'forever'. We can think in this direction if we want to understand what we can expect from eternal life and from the hope that is promised to us. I find this thought somehow comforting.”

Beautiful route along the Lieser, past the "Hotzendrees" sour spring, and behind the "Am Lieserbogen" camper van site

Opposite the Sauerbrunnen (sour spring) used to stand the elementary school. All that remains of it is the name of the spring in the local dialect: Schulldrehs.
