The Plain-de-Saigne pond is a small artificial lake located in Montfaucon. It's a great place to picnic and admire the reflections of the sky and trees on the water. You can also learn about the history of the lake, which was once home to a mill and peat extraction site.

The hiking tour has a height of approx. +- 50 m. The train goes over the mountain, which gives you altitude. Very pleasant to walk, 29 degrees that day, lots of forest, pleasantly cool. Light hiking boots and shorts.

The tour is definitely worth it as a walk. The picnic areas at the lake are very clean and idyllic. The railway depot is also worth seeing. We were greeted warmly and shown through the wagons

Holes dug during the last glaciation, around 9,000 years ago, were filled in, forming peat bogs. The exploitation of peat allowed the return of water to certain ponds. The people of the mountains who had to go to the banks of the Doubs to saw their wood or grind the seed wondered how to obtain the difference in altitude necessary to use the power of the water. The solution: use emposieux or sinkholes! Install a paddle wheel or paddle wheel in the pit and build the sawmill or mill on top. We find this system, in a more imposing size, at the Col des Roches near Le Locle. 1738: Loan made to Bellelay Abbey for the purchase of the place. Pierre Louis Girardin, master miller of Bémont, restarts the mill and sawmill 1846: Authorization to extract peat until 1926 then 1940-41 to heat the city of Basel 1972: area registered as a nature reserve.
