The Hochkreuzkapelle in the Klingenberg district of Röllfeld (located on the tranquil banks of the Röllbach stream) is one of the oldest and most traditional wayside chapels in the lower Main region. The chapel originally dates back to the early 16th century. It is a massive, plastered rectangular building with a gable roof on a high base. A special feature is the open eaves side, which is protected by a distinctive wooden grille. For decades, the chapel stood directly on the busy main road between Röllfeld and Klingenberg. Due to increasing traffic noise and dirt, private devotion or liturgical celebrations were no longer possible. In a spectacular operation, the historic chapel was therefore completely dismantled in 2005 and moved about 100 meters further to the quiet Röllfelder Wiesen (near Himmelthaler Straße). Volunteer helpers contributed around 720 working hours. Interior furnishings and features Despite its small size, the chapel holds significant historical treasures: Inside are 14 stations of a historical Way of the Cross in the so-called Nazarene style from around 1900. It houses figures of the Mother of God (referencing the Röllfeld church's patron saint, the Assumption of Mary) and Saint Rochus from the first half of the 18th century. The Rochus figure dates back to a historical plague vow made by the citizens of Klingenberg between 1631 and 1635. A tomb slab from 1597 and a 13th-century column capital in the chapel recall the church of Grubingen – a historically lost settlement nearby. The Hochkreuzkapelle is closely associated with legends about a holy relic of the cross. Tiny splinters of wood, which according to tradition originate from the true cross of Christ, are still kept today in both the parish church of Klingenberg and that of Röllfeld.

The visit to the gorge is worthwhile – but please not by mountain bike, but on foot! And rightly so, it is of course also very popular with hikers. Especially for families with children, it's a real adventure trip. It's best to combine a hike through the gorge with a visit to the Klingenburg, where you can also eat.
