The name Pankratiuskirche (Pankratius Church) is reminiscent of the first name of a young man who became a Christian in the 3rd century. When he was forced to renounce his Christian faith and return to the Roman polytheistic beliefs, he steadfastly held to his confession of Jesus Christ. The present-day church is a cultural monument of great importance. In the 15th century, wall paintings were added, depicting the 10 Commandments, the Passion story of Jesus, a Marian cycle, and the Last Judgment. In this way, core elements of the Christian faith could be brought closer to the largely illiterate population at the time. Around 1600, by which time the town had become Protestant, these wall paintings were painted over. In the subsequent period, an Advent/Christmas cycle and a Passion/Easter cycle – a total of 16 paintings, each with a Bible verse – were attached to the parapets. The intention was to focus the faithful entirely on the work of Jesus Christ.
