The church was built in 1885 on the site of an older church, dating back to the times of the Templars. The steadily deteriorating condition of the old church prompted its demolition and the construction of a new one. In 1845, its tower collapsed, prompting the decision to demolish it. The project was completed in 1852.

The church was built in the years 1852-1857 as a copy of St. Martin's Church in Berlin in the "Rundbogen" style. It is a three-nave temple built of red brick. On the eastern side there is a high, four-storey tower, on the western side there is an apse containing the presbytery, and on the southern side there is a series of chapels. Each nave is covered with a separate roof, and each of the naves has a separate entrance - a portal topped with triple tympanums and crosses. Inside the temple, the naves are divided into three parts by wooden galleries. They are supported by columns with Tuscan and Corinthian heads. The walls are decorated with paintings. Of note are the organs made by the Berlin company Lang und Dinse and the bells from 1669 and 1794.
