The Nicolaus Copernicus Monument in Warsaw stands on Krakowskie Przedmieście in front of the Staszic Palace (currently the seat of the Polish Academy of Sciences). It was designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and made of bronze, depicting Copernicus seated with a compass and an armillary sphere in his hands. The idea for the monument originated from the initiative of Stanisław Staszic and the Warsaw Society of Friends of Science; the design was created in 1822, and the monument was unveiled on May 11, 1830. Funds came from public donations and Staszic's bequest. Inscriptions were placed on the pedestal: the Latin "Nicolao Copernico Grata Patria" ("To Nicolaus Copernicus, a grateful homeland") and the Polish "Mikołajowi Kopernikowi Rodacy" ("To Nicolaus Copernicus from his countrymen"). During World War II, the Germans covered the Polish inscription with a plaque bearing a German dedication, which was removed in 1942 by scout Maciej Aleksy Dawidowski ("Alek") in an act of minor sabotage. The monument was damaged during the Warsaw Uprising, taken away by the Germans with the intention of melting it down, but after the war it was found and restored to its place, and was re-unveiled after renovation on July 22, 1949. The monument is one of the most recognizable symbols of Warsaw.
