In Roman times it was called Porta Septemtrionalis. ..(see RS7); Diocletian for the first time in 305. The gate is rectangular in shape. There are niches set into the facade in which there were statues of the four tetrarchs (Diocletian, Maximianus, Galerius and Constantius Chlor). Through this gate - via the central square of the palace, the peristyle, and Cardo Street - the path led directly to Salona, then the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. Only the emperor and his family were allowed to pass through the Golden Gate. Today the gate is one of the most popular starting points for tourists visiting the city.
