November 28, 2023, Strontia Springs Dam

The dam is holding back the South Platte River, slowly releasing the Strontia Springs Reservoir. Long horn sheep are bountiful in this area due to the close proximity to water and shelter.

Wellington Lake is a picturesque reservoir at 8,015 feet in elevation. It is privately owned, but open to the public and offers tons of recreational opportunities. Fishing & camping would be the most popular, but there are also biking & hiking trails, as well as rock climbing on the granite formation towering of the lake known as "The Castle".

November 15, 2023, Stoney Pass Road

Stoney Pass Road is hard packed dirt/gravel mix surface. You'll wind in and out of the forest with occasional grass meadows and secluded homes. A gravel bike would be most ideal for comfort, but a road bike with 28mm+ tires is also rideable.

Waterton Canyon Trail follows a dirt and gravel service road up a wide canyon following the South Platte River. This is actually the same path as the most northern miles of the Colorado Trail. The route turns to singletrack after passing the Strontia Springs Dam at the end of the service road. This is a really popular spot for both trail runners and road runners to train on some soft surfaces.
