For centuries, the immense Venetian Arsenal was the shipyard complex that played a key role in establishing the Serenissima's maritime supremacy. The beating heart of the city, developing and expanding starting in the 12th century (Arsenale Vecchio, Arsenale Nuovo, and Arsenale Nuovissimo), it was the largest proto-industrial complex in the world: with a workforce of 16,000 (!!!) at peak activity, surrounded by 4 km-high walls, the entire fleet was built within it, shrouded in secrecy, anticipating modern industrial solutions such as standardized parts and assembly lines. Today, it no longer operates as a shipyard, but remains a unique example of (pre)industrial archaeology with its enormous spaces. Not all areas are open to the public, as some are under military jurisdiction. The North Arsenal is open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 3 pm; The South Arsenal is accessible exclusively during the Venice Biennale, when it hosts the exhibition, by purchasing the exhibition ticket. The construction of the arsenal began under Doge Ordelaf Falier in 1104. The property consisted of two swampy islands in the Castello district. This shipyard, which can be considered the largest manufacturing plant in Europe before the age of industrialization, became a model for other naval arsenals in Europe.

It is definitely worth a visit. The area is partially a military restricted area or protected area. You can only get in after a security check. A visit to the adjacent Giardini Bienalle is worthwhile. Take a break there in the Cafe la Serra and unwind.
