The statue of Charles V is one of the most iconic features of the inner courtyard of the Puerta Nueva de Bisagra, the monumental northern entrance to Toledo's historic center. The work you see today at the Puerta de Bisagra is a 1958 reproduction of the famous Renaissance sculpture "Charles V and the Fury" (or Charles V Subduing the Protestant/Turkish Fury), originally created by the Milanese sculptor Leone Leoni and completed by his son Pompeo Leoni between 1551 and 1564.

The Legend With Toledo almost undefended, the Almoravids besieged the city. Berenguela, only 23 years old, climbed the wall at what is now the Queen's Tower to verbally confront the Muslim leaders. According to tradition, her stern rebuke caused the besiegers to withdraw in shame.

The Queen's Towers are a monumental section of Toledo's medieval city wall, located on Calle Carrera, between the Bisagra Gate and the Almofala Tower. They form part of the old urban defensive system. This section of the wall is visible from outside the Bisagra Gate, extending eastward. The name "Queen's Towers" comes from Berenguela of Barcelona, wife of Alfonso VII, who defended Toledo in 1139 while the king besieged the Muslim fortress of Oreja (near Aranjuez).

The street takes its name from the arch and passageway that connects the Archbishop's Palace with the Primate Cathedral. The original arch burned down in 1610 and was rebuilt by Juan Bautista de Monegro a year later. This is the arch we see today, constructed almost entirely of brick, with a gabled slate roof and three windows on each side of the street.

The (albeit fictional) but highly imaginative stories of the tragic hero Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho Panza, who endure numerous curious adventures, are Spanish world literature in the truest sense of the word, originating in the region of Castile-La Mancha. So, it should come as no surprise that this monument honors the writer and poet Miguel de Cervantes (1547 to 1616) here.
