Tips from the Community

Lemmi alias Schlumpf
June 22, 2026, Collégiale Notre-Dame des Andelys

The Collégiale Notre-Dame is an architectural beauty from the 13th century, even if it may look very much in need of renovation from the outside. Curiosity won, and we were not disappointed 😃 Upon entering the church, we were immediately captivated by the splendor of the stained glass windows, which bathe the building in a beautiful light. The depictions tell the life stories of saints, martyrs, and apostles. The windows in the southern aisle are dated to 1540 and those in the upper part of the nave to 1560. The church was built in 1225 on the ruins of a women's monastery, which had been founded in 511 by Saint Clotilde, the wife of Clovis I. It was expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries and restored in the 19th century, combining the style of classical and late Gothic with the Renaissance style of Henry III and Neo-Gothic.

Château Gaillard is a medieval military masterpiece. Richard the Lionheart had it built on a chalk cliff, high above a large bend in the Seine. The castle is now a ruin, but two villages at the foot of the castle now form Les Andelys together, one of the most beautiful places in France.
