As of the early 20th century, there was a permanent fort and two artillery batteries near the railway junction. Also at that time, the town was engaged in the manufacture of glass bottles, tiles and iron and tin goods, as well as wool-spinning and brewing.[3] The town is served by the Fives-Hirson railway.

A real technical innovation, the Florentine Tower housed the depot’s signal box. 48.87 m high and equipped with a lightning rod, it was erected in concrete (500t) and red bricks (100t), although with some ceramic embellishments. Its square base occupies an area of 49 m2, its rectangular spindle is divided into five floors linked together by a metal staircase and topped by a room of 30 m2 (7.3 mx4.1 m). This room, which offers a panoramic view, supports, via a concrete trapezoid, a cube whose side faces were each decorated with a clock 3.20 m in diameter. They have now disappeared.

Its operating pressure was 7 bars. Property of the Northern Railway Company, it was used to drive the machine tools of the Hellemes Workshops (North). As the SNCF machine tools became autonomous, she ended her career in 1939. It was Monsieur Raclot, director of the Leclerc center, who offered her second youth to the ECO-RAIL association.
