The French and European National Cycleway is a great cycleway winding along side of the Rhine Rhone Canal with very little climbing, for those who do not like to climb. However those who are climbing shy, must be aware of the wind in this area. A lot of the locks still have the former lock man’s house which adds a bit of charm to every lock. One is never alone on this route as there is a constant passing of bicycles, both leisure and racing bikes.

Loop Loop completed with our travel gravel bikes, on one day without luggage. A quick stop in Delle for a very good kebab.

The Citadel of Belfort is a historically complex building, reflecting five centuries of fortifications. It was built after the conquest of the city in 1687, replacing a medieval castle that previously stood on this rocky outcrop.

The Port fluvial de Dannemarie is no ordinary marina – it’s an unexpected oasis along the canal, where boats bob gently and herons keep watch. For cyclists, it feels like a little refuge: a place to take a break from the rhythm of your pedals and take on the rhythm of the water. Here you can refill your water bottle, stretch your legs on a bench in the shade or a little further away at the restaurant, or just watch the sun play on the surface of the canal.

The Écluse d’Eglingen is a small, active lock on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin, near the village of Eglingen in the Sundgau region. This spot is popular with cyclists due to its quiet location along the 'EuroVelo 6' and regional cycle routes. The lock is surrounded by greenery and offers a bench and shade, but no facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many no traffic touring cycling routes are available around Boron?

While Boron itself is not a primary hub for dedicated touring cycling routes, komoot offers over 120 touring cycling routes in the broader region that prioritize low-traffic conditions. These routes vary in length and difficulty, providing options for different experience levels.

What is the best time of year for no traffic touring cycling in the Boron area?

The Mojave Desert climate means that the best time for cycling is typically during the cooler months, from November to February. Summers can be intensely hot, making cycling challenging and potentially unsafe. Spring and fall offer more moderate temperatures, but can still be warm, and strong crosswinds are common.

Are there any family-friendly, low-traffic cycling options near Boron?

For families seeking a dedicated, traffic-free path, the Sierra Bike Trail, located a short drive from Boron towards Lancaster and Palmdale, offers a paved, 7.1-mile route. It runs parallel to railroad tracks and Sierra Highway, keeping cyclists out of traffic lanes. While it offers sparse desert scenery and limited shade, it's a safe option for a relaxed family ride.

What kind of terrain can I expect on low-traffic cycling routes in the Boron region?

The Boron area is characterized by its Mojave Desert landscape, featuring arid terrain, wide-open spaces, and sparse vegetation. Routes may include paved roads with minimal traffic, or unpaved sections that can range from hard-packed dirt to sand and washboard surfaces, especially if venturing into more remote desert areas. Expect gentle hills and playas rather than significant climbs directly around Boron.

What attractions can I visit near Boron after a bike ride?

Boron offers unique historical and industrial attractions. You can visit the U.S. Borax Visitor Center for views of the world's largest open-pit borax mine, explore the history of borax mining at the Twenty Mule Team Museum, or learn about aviation at the Boron Aerospace Museum. These provide a fascinating glimpse into the region's heritage.

Are there any circular, no-traffic touring routes available?

While dedicated circular touring routes specifically within Boron are limited, many of the low-traffic routes in the broader desert region can be adapted into loops by combining different segments of paved or unpaved roads with minimal vehicle presence. Planning with a map or GPS is recommended to create your own circular tours.

What do other touring cyclists enjoy most about cycling in the Boron area?

The komoot community rates the touring cycling experience in the broader Boron region highly, with an average score of 4.5 stars from over 200 ratings. Cyclists often appreciate the unique desert scenery, the sense of solitude on low-traffic roads, and the opportunity to explore a different kind of outdoor environment.

Are there any specific considerations for cycling in the desert climate around Boron?

Yes, desert cycling requires careful preparation. Always carry ample water, as shade and resupply points are scarce. Be prepared for significant temperature fluctuations, especially between day and night, and strong winds are common. Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses) is essential, and it's advisable to inform someone of your route and expected return time.

Can I find places to eat or stay in Boron?

Boron is a small community, but it does offer basic amenities. You can find local cafes and restaurants for meals, and there are limited accommodation options available. It's always a good idea to check availability and opening hours in advance, especially if planning a longer touring trip.

Is public transport available to access cycling routes near Boron?

Public transportation options directly to specific low-traffic cycling routes in the immediate Boron area are very limited. Most cyclists will need to use a personal vehicle to reach starting points for routes, particularly for those venturing into the wider Mojave Desert. The Sierra Bike Trail, while not directly in Boron, is accessible by car with parking available near its access points in Lancaster or Palmdale.

What kind of bike is best suited for no-traffic touring in the Boron region?

Given the potential for varied surfaces, including paved roads and unpaved desert tracks, a touring bike with wider tires (e.g., gravel bike or a hybrid with robust tires) would be ideal. If you plan to explore more remote, unpaved desert roads, a mountain bike might be more suitable for handling sand and washboard surfaces.
