This neo-Gothic church was built to replace the dilapidated church of the Recollect Fathers, a men's convent founded in 1627. In the 19th century, the church wanted to encourage a revival of Catholic worship; it encouraged the construction of new religious buildings in Gironde. Thus, in 1856, the Saint-Géronce church was consecrated. Due to lack of space, its apse was oriented towards the south, contrary to what the liturgy provided. The organ, which has its original construction from 1861, is remarkable. Mass is celebrated there every Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.

There are several routes suitable for gravel biking in Macau that offer a traffic-free or low-traffic experience. Our guide features 9 such routes, ranging from moderate to difficult, allowing you to explore the diverse landscapes of the region.
Macau's gravel trails offer a surprising variety of landscapes. You can expect scenic coastal paths with ocean views, such as those found along the Taipa coastline or connecting Hac Sa Beach to Cheoc Van Beach. Coloane Island, known as one of Macau's 'green lungs,' provides routes through forested hills and natural parks. Some paths also traverse areas with mangroves, offering unique ecological experiences.
Yes, for those seeking a challenge, there are routes with more significant elevation changes. For example, the Bourg Citadel – Saint-Géronce Church loop from Bourg is classified as difficult, covering over 55 km with more than 600 meters of elevation gain, providing a demanding gravel experience away from heavy traffic.
While many routes offer varied terrain, the coastal paths are generally more accessible and often car-free, making them suitable for families. The Taipa Coastal Trail, for instance, is a popular car-free path ideal for leisurely rides with ocean vistas. Always check the route details for specific difficulty and terrain to ensure it matches your family's skill level.
Macau enjoys a mild climate for much of the year, making it an ideal location for outdoor adventures. The cooler, drier months from October to March are generally considered the most pleasant for cycling, avoiding the heat and humidity of summer and the typhoon season.
Many routes offer stunning views, particularly along the coastlines of Taipa and Coloane. On Coloane Island, you can find the Citadel of Blaye, a historical site, or the Saint-Géronce Church. The Hac Sa Long Chao Kok Coastal Trail on Coloane also features impressive rock formations and scenic ocean views. For panoramic city views, while not directly on a gravel trail, Guia Hill is a notable landmark.
Yes, several routes are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. An example is the Paloumey Gravel Pit – Château Giscours loop from Ludon-Médoc, which offers a moderate 30 km ride. Loop trails are convenient for parking and exploring without needing a return trip.
Parking availability varies by location. For popular coastal trails like the Taipa Coastal Trail or routes around Hac Sa Beach, there are often designated parking areas. For trails on Coloane Island, look for parking near major parks or attractions such as Hac Sa Reservoir Country Park or Seac Pai Van Park, which often have facilities for visitors.
Macau has a comprehensive public transport network, including buses, that can take you to various parts of Taipa and Coloane islands where many of these trails are located. While specific bike carriage policies may vary, you can often reach the vicinity of trailheads by bus and then cycle from there. Planning your route with public transport in mind is advisable.
Given Macau's climate, lightweight, breathable cycling apparel is recommended. Even in cooler months, layers are useful. Always wear a helmet, and consider padded shorts for comfort on longer rides. Sun protection, including sunglasses and sunscreen, is essential, especially on exposed coastal sections. Bring enough water, as some trails may not have frequent refreshment stops.
The komoot community highly rates the gravel biking experience in Macau, with an average score of 5.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the unexpected natural beauty, the blend of coastal and forested landscapes, and the opportunity to escape the urban bustle on traffic-free paths. The unique black sand of Hac Sa Beach and the diverse terrain are frequently highlighted as enjoyable aspects.
