Coming from Beas de Guadix, you first have to overcome a steep climb. Doable with a MTB cassette, 38/42 were quite strenuous with a loaded bike. At the top, however, you are rewarded with a fantastic view. Absolutely brilliant and recommended.

The no-traffic gravel routes in La Calahorra are generally considered difficult, featuring significant elevation gains and remote sections. They require a good level of fitness and appropriate equipment. For example, the Cave town Guadix – Castillo de La Calahorra loop from La Calahorra-Ferreira covers over 100 km with more than 1700 meters of ascent.
Given the challenging and varied terrain, a gravel bike with at least 40mm tires is highly recommended for optimal comfort and traction. A hardtail mountain bike would also be suitable for many of these routes, especially those with chunkier gravel or more technical sections.
Yes, the region is rich in history and natural beauty. You can cycle past the impressive 16th-century Castillo de La Calahorra, a designated National Historic-artistic Monument. Many routes also offer glimpses of the unique Cave town Guadix, known for its ancient cave dwellings. Spring (April-May) and Autumn (September-October) are generally the best times for gravel biking in La Calahorra. The temperatures are milder, and the landscapes are vibrant. Summer can be very hot, especially in the Badlands, while winter can bring snow to higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada, making some routes impassable but offering unique challenges for experienced riders.
The routes in this guide are rated as difficult due to their length, elevation gain, and remote nature, making them less suitable for young children or beginners. For family-friendly options, it's advisable to look for shorter, flatter sections of agricultural paths or dedicated greenways in the broader region, which may not be covered in this specific guide focused on challenging no-traffic gravel routes.
Generally, dogs are permitted on most public trails in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and surrounding areas, provided they are kept under control, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife. Always ensure your dog is well-behaved, on a leash where required, and that you carry water for them, as many routes are remote with limited access to water sources.
La Calahorra village itself offers basic amenities, including some local cafes and accommodation options. For a wider selection of services, the nearby town of Guadix provides more choices for restaurants, cafes, and hotels. Many of the gravel routes are remote, so it's essential to carry sufficient food and water for your ride.
