Not even visible on many maps but this is a lovely little gravel lane along the edge of the forest.

April 21, 2021, Plump Hill

Plump Hill, to the south of the town of Mitcheldean, boasts excellent forest trails, the magical curative powers of nearby St. Anthony's Well and Plump Hill Dolomite Quarry, an 11 acre (4.5 ha) nature reserve. With a number of accommodation options, the area is a good base for those wanting to explore the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley AONB. The Plump Hill Dolomite Quarry is an abandoned excavation, last used in the early 20th century. An assortment of limestone grassland plants have established themselves on the site. The most unusual plant found here is the autumn ladies tresses, a small orchid that blooms in late summer. Other species of note include bogbean, white horehound and large thyme.

Mitcheldean, on the northern fringes of the Forest of Dean, is characterised by old timbered houses and narrow streets. It is a good base for many marvellous hikes in the ancient woodland. Legend has it that St Anthony's Well, about a mile to the south of the village, has magical powers. The curative effects of its icy cold waters were championed by the monks of Flaxley Abbey, who claimed it as a remedy for skin disease.

1km climb out of Mitcheldean averaging 8-9% but steeper near the top - good road surface. At the top you can continue on the road to Drybrook or there is a gravel track on the left that brings you out at Harrow Hill.

Nice little unexpected viewpoint and beautifully carved bench on the top of the hill. Worth a break before the final push to the top!
