The present building is a cathedral. The abbey that preceded it was shut down after the reformation and only its ruins remain.

On the south side of the underpass the route towards Bury is narrow with spiky brambles trailing across the path, like police tyre stingers, and then a section of gravel. Ok for a couple of riders happy to pick their way along but groups would be better avoiding.
