Harnessing the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of human discovery, whose origins can be traced back to ancient times. Thanks to such a design, a watercourse – natural or artificial – made it possible to simply replace human or animal muscle power with the power of natural elements, for example, to grind grain into corn or press oil from fruit. There are essentially two drive variants for watermills: * Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or * the water is guided above the wheel – usually through a so-called "mill channel" – and falls onto the blades. This design, thanks to natural gravity, ensures greater efficiency.

The water-powered Manor Mill probably supplied the flour for the bakery. The mill has recently been restored and is now in full working order.

They say that Branscombe Forge in Devon is the oldest thatched working forge in the country, which is quite something. You think – blacksmiths have worked here for over 400 years, and its currently run by a third generation blacksmith. The essential fabric of the building probably hasn’t changed all that much in that time – still the thick stone rubble walls, the low heavy thatch, and the open shelter at the front where the blacksmiths would have shod the horses back in the day.

There's a ford and a footbridge here, just west of Colyton on the River Coly. The crossings are surrounded by farmland in a blissfully rural setting. The Coly is lazy here, adding to the picturesque nature of the area. The Channel to Channel footpath and East Devon Way both pass by/use the bridge.
