Recent design makeover sets the place off a treat for a treat in the sun or inside. At least a star or 2 over the former 'speckledy' regime.

It's open most days 10-4, but 9-12noon Saturday. I found the quiche and salad outstanding.

Very sandy. Geology changes from the chalk and flint of the rest of the downs to green sand (not green). Not easy to walk on when it's dry!

Blackheath Common is criss crossed by trails that explore its gorgeous mix of woodland and open sandy heath. Its 250-acre (100 ha) sprawl is popular with both hikers and cyclists. It's also home to Blackheath, one of Surrey's smallest and most peaceful villages.
