Lots to find in here, I was told school children displayed the fairies in the trees.

Take your time down this section as it can get quite busy with people, dog walkers, and cyclists. Some sections are newly laid tarmac but other areas are hardstanding compacted stone. The canal does narrow in parts but all ridable with caution at the locks.

Handmade Bakery is a popular choice for a decent pastry and coffee. Get them at opening time.

November 15, 2024, Colne Bridge

Colne Bridge is an 18th century, Grade II listed stone arch bridge spanning the River Colne between Bradley and Kirkheaton. Its history dates back to the 12th century, when a bridge at this location was recorded in the Fountains Abbey archives. The bridge lent its name to the surrounding village and Colne Bridge Mill, which tragically burned down in 1818. Notably, historian Ted Ruddock suggested that Colne Bridge may have influenced John Smeaton’s design for the Blackfriars Bridge in London.

Awesome views by the canal. You could see one side trains going and boats on the canal and tree canopy.

Welcome to the starting point of the Huddersfield Broad Canal, where you will encounter the first lock of this picturesque waterway. As the canal branches off from the meandering River Calder, you will be greeted by the sight of a former lockkeeper's cottage lovingly transformed into residential housing. There is a green grassy patch adjacent to the river too, which makes an idyllic spot to relax, unwind, and enjoy some lunch.
