Holy Cross was built in the Neo-Gothic style between 1895 and 1897 according to plans by Mainz cathedral master builder Ludwig Becker (1855-1940). The interior was completed by 1921 – also according to the architect's designs. Pastor Caspar Kranz and others added further sculptures between 1921 and 1935. After severe war damage, reconstruction followed between 1947 and 1949. In 1963, the sacristy was rebuilt and a chapel for the sick was established. In 1968, the exterior was renovated and the entrances were relocated. The redesign of the church interior followed between 1969 and 1972, and the interior was finally renovated in 2006.
