Tips from the Community

Luca N.
May 24, 2026, Castello di Collalto

The Castle of Collalto is an ancient medieval manor founded in the 12th century by the noble family of the Counts of Collalto. Strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the Piave plain, the castle soon became the hub of a vast and powerful feud. Over the centuries, the structure transformed from a military fortress into a splendid noble residence, enriched with works of art including frescoes by Pordenone. Unfortunately, its crucial position on the front line during World War I led to its almost total destruction under bombardment. Today, of the glorious original complex, the evocative ruins remain, dominated by the imposing 12th-century master tower, the defensive walls, and the nearby church of San Giorgio, which bear witness to the millennial charm of one of the most important historical sites in the Marca Trevigiana.

This house of God in Cimadolmo bears a name as its patron saint that is truly on everyone's lips, yet probably only a few will know the person behind it: The feast day of Saint Sylvester (San Silvestro) is on December 31st. He lived at the end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th century and was Bishop of Rome when Emperor Constantine, with the Edict of Milan – known as the "Edict of Tolerance" – recognized Christianity as a religion, thereby (at least temporarily) ending the era of bloody Christian persecution.

a clear octagon in the middle of the plain: outside a always useful fountain. Inside, the surprise of a modern church that encloses a millenary history, which you can find described next to the door. Santa Maria in Palù or della fontanella, is a protector of those with vision problems: this explains the evangelical citation of the blind man from the pool of Siloam, which is found inside, behind the altar

The Church of San Silvestro Papa in Cimadolmo was rebuilt after the First World War, designed by architect Luigi Candiani, following the destruction of the previous place of worship during the First World War. The single-chamber building is oriented east-west, with an entrance to the east. In addition to the four side chapels, a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes was built in 1926 to the right of the presbytery. Rebuilt after the previous chapel was destroyed during the bombings, it features an artificial reproduction of the rock walls of a cave.
