"Macchie, a hamlet of the municipality of Amelia in Umbria, still preserves some traces of its medieval past, including a city gate of the ancient castle. This gate is part of the remains of the ancient fortifications of Macchie, once known as Castrum Machiae. Together with the walls and a tower, the gate is a testimony to the defensive structure of the village in the medieval era. The city gate of Macchie probably dates back to the period in which the castle was a possession of Amelia. City gates in general were access structures inserted into the walls of cities, often characterized by decorative and defensive elements. They served both as a monumental entrance and as a traffic and security control point. Although no detailed information is provided, the gate of Macchie represents an important element of the historical-architectural heritage of this small Umbrian hilltop village, testifying to its past as a fortified settlement".
