Located in the southern part of the territory of Montaione, bordering the municipality of Volterra, the locality of Iano can be reached by following the road that goes from Montaione through San Vivaldo and heads towards Villamagna. The hills around Iano date back to the Pliocene (8 million years ago), while the hill between Iano and Palagio, on top of which stands the Sanctuary of Pietrina, is one of the three islands of Tuscany that emerged in the Carboniferous period, along with Monte Serra and the island of Elba. For this reason, many fossil and mineral remains can be found in the surrounding area. The origins of Iano date back to the Etruscan period, as evidenced by the discovery of a funerary stone depicting a warrior dating back to the 5th century BC. Although there are no traces from the Roman era, the castles of Camporena and La Pietra were located in the area, of which only some remains can be found today.
