Convenient starting point for reaching various places including Monte Sparavera. The parking lot can accommodate about thirty cars, and along the road about 7/8 more. Remember to get the scratch-off parking permit, available for purchase in the municipalities of Peia or Ranzanico (it is not the same one needed for M.Farno).

It is not necessary to go all the way to the top of Sparavera. Already from this position the view of the lake is fantastic. The flowering meadows and the dense tree canopies scattered here and there invite you to stop and perhaps even have a snack and a nap! Please always behave decently and take your rubbish with you!

The no-traffic gravel trails in Zone are generally quite challenging, featuring significant elevation gains and longer distances. For example, routes like the Malga Guglielmo di Sopra – Ascent to Monte Guglielmo loop involve over 1700 meters of climbing. These are typically better suited for experienced gravel bikers rather than beginners or young families.
Given the mountainous terrain and lake regions around Zone, the best time for gravel biking is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October). During these months, you'll find more stable weather, open mountain huts, and clear trails. Winter can bring snow and ice, making many of the higher elevation routes impassable or requiring specialized gear.
Considering the challenging nature of Zone's no-traffic gravel trails, which often include significant climbs and descents, we recommend a well-maintained gravel bike with appropriate gearing for steep ascents. Tubeless tires with good puncture protection are advisable, along with plenty of water, snacks, and layers of clothing to adapt to changing mountain weather. A GPS device with offline maps is also crucial for navigation.
Yes, all the no-traffic gravel bike routes featured in this guide are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For instance, the View of Lake Iseo – Monticelli loop from Piangaiano offers a scenic circular tour around the lake region.
Many routes offer stunning natural beauty and points of interest. You might encounter highlights such as the Pyramids of Zone, a unique geological formation, or enjoy panoramic views from the Peschiera Maraglio Lakeside Promenade. Higher routes often pass by mountain huts like Malga Guglielmo di Sopra, offering opportunities for refreshments.
While many of these routes venture into remote areas, some pass by villages or mountain huts where you can find refreshments. For example, the Malga Gale – Colle di San Zeno loop might offer opportunities near its namesake locations. Always check opening times for huts, especially outside peak season, and carry enough supplies as a backup.
The komoot community highly rates the gravel biking experience in Zone, with an average score of 4.55 stars. Riders often praise the challenging climbs, the rewarding panoramic views of Lake Iseo and the surrounding mountains, and the sense of solitude on these traffic-free routes. The diverse landscapes, from lakeside paths to high mountain pastures, are frequently highlighted.
While specific regulations for dogs on these trails are not provided, generally, dogs are welcome on many outdoor trails in the region, provided they are kept under control, especially around livestock or wildlife. Always carry water for your dog and be mindful of their endurance on longer, more strenuous routes like the Val Palot loop.
Beyond the trails themselves, Zone offers several notable attractions. You could visit the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Ceriola for its historical and spiritual significance, or explore the scenic Vello–Toline Cycle Path, which offers a different kind of cycling experience along the lake.
The duration varies significantly based on the route's distance and elevation gain, as well as your fitness level. For example, the Forcellino di Pezzoro – Rovedolo cycle-pedestrian path loop is around 31.5 km and can take over 2.5 hours, while longer routes like the Malga Guglielmo di Sopra loop, at over 41 km with substantial climbing, can take upwards of 3.5-4 hours or more.
