The Fortore river before diving into Lake Occhito

Let me start by saying that I did a complete tour of the lake starting from the crossroads on the state road to Tufara and then going back up towards Celenza Valfortore. As far as I'm concerned, I preferred the Apulian side to the Molise side, both for the panorama and for the "quality" of the road. I suggest turning around at the barrier (Puglia side) since at a certain point there is no practicable route. We took absurd gambles in the middle of bushes full of thorns. Furthermore, according to the operators of the barrier, you have to call the consortium and get a permit to be able to cross.

Quite large lake that marks the border between Puglia and Molise. It is an artificial reservoir created by the damming of the river Fortore.

The region around San Giuliano Di Puglia, part of Molise, is characterized by dolci colline (gentle hills), offering scenic routes with panoramic views. While not overly strenuous, the routes often involve ascents and descents through agricultural landscapes, particularly olive groves. You'll find a mix of secondary roads and paths, designed to keep you away from heavy traffic.
Yes, there are several circular routes designed for touring cyclists seeking no-traffic options. For example, you can explore the Lake Occhito Loop, which offers a 36.5 km ride with significant elevation, or the longer Fiume Fortore loop from Colletorto, spanning nearly 69 km. Another option is the Castello o Palazzo Baronale loop from Rotello, which is about 34.7 km.
The routes offer opportunities to discover natural beauty and historical sites. You can cycle past the picturesque Lago di Occhito, an artificial lake known for its diverse flora and fauna. History enthusiasts might enjoy views of the ancient Dragonara Castle. The Bosco Casale Regional Nature Reserve, an ancient oak forest, is also nearby, offering a chance to explore diverse woodlands.
The no-traffic touring cycling routes around San Giuliano Di Puglia tend to be on the more challenging side, often rated as 'difficult'. This is due to the hilly terrain, with routes like the Lake Occhito Loop featuring over 700 meters of elevation gain over 36.5 km, and the Fiume Fortore loop from Colletorto with over 1300 meters of ascent.
Given the 'difficult' rating and significant elevation gains of the listed touring routes, they might be challenging for younger children or families seeking very easy, flat rides. However, the broader Molise and Puglia regions offer many secondary roads and ancient sheep tracks ('tratturi') that are generally low-traffic and could be explored for gentler, shorter family outings, though specific dedicated family routes without traffic are not detailed here.
While the routes themselves are generally open, specific rules regarding dogs can vary, especially within nature reserves like the Bosco Casale Regional Nature Reserve. It's always best to keep dogs on a leash and ensure they are well-behaved, especially when encountering other cyclists or wildlife. Always carry water for your pet.
The Molise region generally offers pleasant cycling conditions during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, temperatures are milder, and the landscapes are particularly beautiful with blooming flora or autumn colors. Summer can be quite hot, especially in July and August, making early morning or late afternoon rides more comfortable.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.0 stars. Reviewers often praise the tranquil nature of the routes, the panoramic views across the gentle hills, and the opportunity to cycle through picturesque olive groves and past natural features like Lago di Occhito, all while enjoying minimal traffic.
Yes, some areas in the region feature gravel sections. Notably, a dedicated Gravel Road Along Lake Occhito runs on its Apulian side, which is perfect for gravel or mountain biking. While the listed touring routes primarily use secondary roads, it's advisable to check route details for specific surface information if you prefer paved-only rides.
For routes starting from towns like Colletorto or Rotello, you can typically find public parking within the village centers. For routes that begin near natural attractions such as Lago di Occhito or Bosco Casale, there may be designated parking areas for visitors. Always check local signage for parking regulations.
San Giuliano Di Puglia and nearby towns in the Molise region are known for their rich local food and wine traditions. While the routes themselves are designed to be away from heavy traffic, you will find cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options in the villages and towns you pass through or start from. It's a good idea to plan your stops in advance, especially in smaller, more rural areas.
