Since last year, the buildings have become somewhat more accessible but also more fragile…

At the foot of the massive artillery fort is the military port, which was used for handling torpedoes and ammunition. It has an extensive quay; numerous rusty rails connected by turntables lead to the large warehouses, which are now in various stages of picturesque decay, and are evidence of extensive goods handling. A beautiful, undestroyed lost place, which impresses solely through natural decay. Since it can even be reached by car, a rainy day was ideal for a solitary visit.

There is not much in Stagnali. Some of the old military barracks are obviously used for residential purposes, but most of the buildings are in various stages of decay. The only thing that distinguishes the Madonna della Pace church from the other barracks is a bell tower with a cross. You enter the courtyard out of curiosity and are surprised to find an open church door luring you into the well-kept building, where services are obviously also held. The front wall is decorated with a large mural in which the Madonna floats above the (formerly lively) village.
