The short detour from the main path is not to be missed. In dry weather, the path is also easily accessible by bike. After about 200 meters, you reach the legendary Raven Tree. This was the site of a medieval execution site. An information panel explains its history and that of the mill farmers from Samerrott. The actual Raven Tree, in whose hollow the Baptist Jan Kuiper is said to have hidden while fleeing from the Bishop of Münster, was destroyed by storm and arson. The farmers of Samerrott have fenced off the tree's former circumference (11 meters) with iron-bound oak planks in the shape of its former size and planted a new oak tree in its ashes. Seating areas invite you to take a break and reflect on the tree's history.

A beautiful piece of nature. The Rabenbaum is located directly on the old postal route (Samerott), which leads from Rheine to Schüttorf.

Legendary tree as a place of execution: The Samerrott is a 266 hectare forest area first mentioned in documents in 1109. The landscape conservation area has been managed as a forest by a forestry cooperative for centuries. The Samerrott is particularly known for its medieval place of execution at the legendary "raven tree". This stood in the center until the middle of the 19th century and is said to have had a circumference of 11 meters and a diameter of 3.5 meters. In 1798 the tree lost its crown in a storm; the stump was later set on fire by vandals. The forest farmers fenced off the former size and planted a new oak tree. https://www.grafschaft-bentheim-tourismus.de/poi/rabenbaum

Sufficient information about the county art trail, some seating and the "entrance" to a great forest.

The forest also offered Protestant refugees protection from their pursuers during the Thirty Years' War. A commemorative plaque further in the forest (behind the old bridge) indicates this. This also shows the historical importance of this forest.
