🍇Steinberg Vineyard: It is arguably one of the most famous and oldest vineyards in the world🍇: Known as the favorite vineyard of the monks of Eberbach Abbey, who established viticulture in the Rheingau, Steinberg remains the sole property of the Hessian State Wineries Kloster Eberbach. Furthermore, with approximately 34 hectares of vineyards, Steinberg is the largest contiguous vineyard holding in the Rheingau. Unique is the 3.8-kilometer-long and up to four-meter-high stone wall, which the monks painstakingly built to protect against grape thieves and wild animals. Above all, this wall, preserved and restored to this day, protects the grapes in Steinberg from the cold air currents from the nearby forest and creates a unique microclimate by retaining heat. The deep slate soils found here produce a high-acid, mineral wine that also ages well.
