The approximately 25-hectare island was first mentioned in 1704 as “Der Sandtwerder” and was initially a barren sandy area. In 1882, the lamp manufacturer Wilhelm Wessel acquired the island and built a bridge and a ring-shaped access road. In the years before the First World War, Schwanenwerder developed into a sought-after residential area for wealthy Berliners, such as the department store owners Berthold Israel and Rudolph Karstadt, as well as bankers like Oscar Wassermann and Samuel Goldschmidt. In July 1945, the Americans displaced the Russians and used the island for the Potsdam Conference. https://www.bz-berlin.de/berlin/steglitz-zehlendorf/schwanenwerder

From here you have a beautiful view of the frigate shed on Peacock Island. Only from here can you see that the shed could actually be used as quarters for the frigate. On the island, the shed looks like a normal house.

Before the rerouting, the A115 motorway ran west of Dreilinden. At this point, the motorway turned south toward the Teltow Canal. In doing so, it crossed the Potsdam Main Railway line (https://www.i2030.de/suedwest/). The old railway bridge is still preserved and a popular hiking destination. Also clearly visible is the crash barrier, which was intended to protect the central bridge pier from collisions with trucks. As part of the planning for its reopening, the question of whether the bridge is still needed is being considered.
