Der Bornschisser
December 4, 2025, Friedrichsplatz Kassel

During the times of the documenta, which takes place every 5 years, Friedrichsplatz is one of the central exhibition areas. Here began the project initiated by JOSEPH BEUYS - 7000 Oaks -, which started at documenta 7 and was completed 5 years later with documenta 8. The first and the last oak of this project stand in front of the Museum Friedericianum. There are also 2 other "exhibits" there. The VERTICAL EARTH KILOMETER in the middle of the square and the sculpture THE STRANGERS on the roof / portico of the former Rotes Palais.

In the 1960s, our parents would drag us to the "Aue" for Sunday or holiday strolls as a closer alternative to the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe. We didn't have a car back then, and the Aue was relatively easy to reach by tram. Today, it's much better by bus. And honestly, it wasn't always uplifting for us kids back then. In our Sunday best. And walking. Who liked that? In the late 1970s, until I finally moved away from Kassel in the late 1980s, the Aue was one of my favorite jogging routes. And today. One of my favorite destinations during our relatively frequent "visits" to Kassel, where I also worked until a few years ago. In every season. And often with a (paid!) detour to Siebenbergen, another gem in the Aue. Karlsaue State Park, the green lung of Kassel. An oasis. And located in the immediate vicinity of the city center. What more could you want? And the fact that cycling is prohibited there doesn't bother me, even as a diligent e-biker. There's still the Fulda floodplain.

Inaugurated in 1913, this prestigious building by architect Theodor Fischer combines Art Nouveau and Neo-Renaissance styles. Particularly striking is the tower, visible from afar, which can be climbed and thus enjoys a panoramic view of the region. Inside, three floors are filled with Hessian history spanning many centuries, from the Stone Age to the present day.
