Beautiful half-timbered house in Verden an der Aller.

At the foot of the former defense tower, which has survived from the medieval fortifications of Verden, stands the executioner's house. This is a half-timbered house from 1553, which was structurally altered in the years 1714/15. Colloquially, the house is also called "Bödelei". Until 1831, the executioners of Verden lived here in the house with a courtyard and a small garden. In the executioner's house, in the semi-underground prison cell, an unadorned cellar hole, the inmates sat behind several massive oak doors. The only source of light was a barred window opening high above the heads of the inmates. The "painful interrogation" also took place here, i.e. the accused was forced to confess. In 1838, the defense tower was converted into a prison with eight cells and a guardroom.

There are many paths and a bit of "wilderness" here. It's especially beautiful in the fall! There's plenty of parking.
