St. Mary's Church is a deconsecrated Roman Catholic church located in Bochum-Mitte on Humboldtstrasse. The distinctive spire of the neo-Gothic brick church is approximately 70 meters high. In May 2000, plans to demolish the church were announced. Ultimately, the decision was made to build a concert hall for the Bochum Symphony Orchestra on Marienplatz, next to the church. This allowed the church to be incorporated into the plans for the new music center, and it now serves the musicians, among other things, as a concert hall.

The name recalls the former Friederika Colliery (https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeche_Friederika), which was located here on the former Wiemelhauser Strasse. Before the construction of Universitätsstrasse, Wiemelhauser Strasse led to the city center (hence the current beginning at house number 180). The colliery's first shaft must have been located approximately where the BGW administration building is today. A connecting railway line led from the colliery site to what was then the main train station, today the street "Am Kulturgleis." The route is still recognizable on the cycle and footpath behind the Thürmersaal and the employment office, as well as parallel to Kronenstrasse.
