In Kellenhusen, you will mostly find a fine-sandy main beach, but the water is often pebbly. For a real, natural stone beach, it is best to hike north towards Klostersee (Kellenhusener Forst). There you will find plenty of stones, flints, and fossils.

On the railway embankment running along the western part of the lake, there is a footpath. In warm weather, the inland waters quickly begin to bloom, which is a result of the high nutrient input from the freshwater inflows and the municipal sewage treatment plant. On the eastern shore, hidden by a school forest, lies the former municipal landfill. This becomes visible again and again at the eroding shoreline. This landfill is monitored with the help of control drillings.

A peninsula, overgrown with salt marshes, juts out into the northwestern part of the lake. This biotope, which has become rare on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, is a breeding and resting place as well as a food reservoir for a number of waders and water birds, including the curlew, the redshank, the snipe, and the common tern.
