Volker Rump 🌲〽️
June 28, 2026, Steam Locomotive 84-87

This shunting steam locomotive has the 3/3 axle arrangement, meaning that 3 out of 3 axles (connected by rods) are driven. The power of this small locomotive is generated by heating water over a coal fire. The resulting steam is guided (in this case, one on each side) into a cylinder. The piston inside is pushed out by the steam pressure. This energy is transferred via a connecting rod to a flywheel, which is connected to one of the axles. When the piston is pushed back, the "used" steam is expelled noisily. As the speed increases, a rhythmic snorting can be heard, which led to the name steam horses. Here, we have more of a steam pony, which served for 55 years in the border station of Buchs.
