The Monument to Don Giovanni d'Austria is dedicated to the hero of the Battle of Lepanto. Before the battle, the fleet of the Holy League assembled in the harbor of Messina. They then sailed to the Gulf of Patras and defeated the Turkish armada. Its commander, Ali Pasha, was killed in the fighting. The statue depicts Don Giovanni d'Austria in a martial victorious pose; he stands with one foot on the head of the slain Turkish leader, Ali Pasha.
