Less brightly colored than its big brother on the lower floor, it is nevertheless interesting and the path that goes up to it (alternative to the road) is absolutely magnificent.

A smaller, but still perfectly formed, lake located above the larger Lake Émosson. This lake is connected by a beautiful winding road, alternating between paved and gravel, allowing you to access a stunning alpine environment without the need for a big, sturdy bike. This area is also full of dinosaur footprints, so be sure to look for them!

A magnificent artificial lake, located on the Swiss side of the iconic Chamonix valley. The lake, held back by a large concrete dam, has deep blue water fed by runoff from the surrounding mountains. This area is also home to some well-preserved dinosaur footprints, so be sure to look for them! On top of all that, you have perhaps the best view of the Chamonix valley from this location; you have a perfect view of the Aiguille Verte and the Mont Blanc massif.

Our guide features three distinct touring cycling routes in the wider Lac du Vieux Émosson area. These routes offer varying levels of difficulty, from moderate to difficult, ensuring options for different cycling abilities.
The most challenging route is the Finhaut-Émosson and Lac du Vieux-Émosson Climb. This difficult 25.1 km route features a significant elevation gain of almost 1,300 meters, with sections reaching up to a 17.7% grade. It's a demanding ascent that has even been featured in professional races like the Tour de France.
While many routes in the immediate Lac du Vieux Émosson area are quite challenging, the wider region offers options. For a moderate experience, consider the Argentières – Argentière Village loop from Argentière, which covers 10.3 km with a more manageable elevation gain of just over 300 meters. This route provides a less strenuous option for families or those seeking a more relaxed ride.
The routes offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Swiss Alps, including the majestic Mont Blanc massif. You'll also enjoy spectacular vistas of the high alpine lakes, the impressive Emosson Dam, and the valley below, providing a truly rewarding visual experience throughout your ride.
Beyond the stunning alpine scenery, you can explore the impressive Emosson Dam and the Vieux Émosson Dam, both integral to the region's hydroelectric power. A unique natural attraction is the discovery of 240-million-year-old fossilized reptile footprints near the southern end of Vallon du Vieux-Emosson, offering a fascinating glimpse into ancient history.
The best time to visit for touring cycling is typically during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn, when the mountain passes are clear of snow and the weather is most favorable. Always check local weather conditions before heading out, as alpine weather can change rapidly.
While much of the cycling route to Lac du Vieux Émosson is paved, be aware that approximately 20% of the roadway, particularly towards the finish, can consist of dirt and gravel. However, it is generally manageable even with road bikes equipped with 28mm tires.
Yes, for a place to rest and refuel, the Cabane du Vieux Emosson is located at the foot of the Vieux Emosson Dam. This refuge and restaurant offers meals and snacks, providing a convenient stop during your ride.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.3 out of 5 stars. Reviewers often praise the challenging yet rewarding climbs, the unbelievable views of Mont Blanc, and the dramatic alpine scenery that makes every ride visually spectacular.
Historically, the VerticAlp Emosson system offered a spectacular journey to the dams via a funicular and panoramic train. While some components were closed in 2022, it's advisable to check current public transport options and schedules to the Finhaut or Emosson area if you plan to arrive without a car.
Yes, the Refuge du Col de Balme – Col de Balme loop from Argentière offers a scenic circular route. This difficult 19 km loop provides a challenging ride with nearly 960 meters of elevation gain, allowing you to start and finish in the same location while enjoying diverse alpine landscapes.
