Unlike so many other mountain pastures in northern Spain, the Majada de Belbín has not fallen into ruin. A large part of the buildings is in good condition, there is a drivable path from the Lagos leading here - and when I walked through, there was actually a car and someone was working on one of the buildings.

Already on the way to Covadonga, you repeatedly see the basilica, how it spectacularly thrones on its mountain. Just how it was placed in the mountain landscape is already a work of art in itself. Built from pink sandstone in the Neo-Romanesque style, you wouldn't guess at first glance that the church was only built in the 19th century. In this style and at this location, the basilica easily surpasses many a much larger cathedral in big cities. I also like the basilica very much on the inside. Very tasteful, the believer is not overwhelmed by a multitude of statues and ornate altars; the basilica captivates much more through relatively few, but beautifully designed statues, a surprisingly modest but very stylish altar, and successful lighting. Not too much, not too little, the basilica embraces instead of overwhelming.

According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared to the Asturian prince Don Pelayo in the Holy Cave of Covadonga before the battle against the Moors. Don Pelayo was the first Christian prince to defeat the Moors in battle. He pursued them through the Picos de Europa, thereby initiating the Reconquista. He is thus also considered the first king of Asturias, the first Christian kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula after the Muslim conquest.

While tourists flock around the parking lots and lakes, I found a bit of peace here and can enjoy the beautiful views of the Picos. A short hike here is worth it.

My opinion about Lake Enol is that it is the most beautiful and spectacular of the Lagos de Covadonga, and one of the most special mountain landscapes in Asturias. 🌊 Iconic image: its deep lake, the reflected mountains, and the grazing cows create a perfect postcard. 🏔️ Sense of grandeur: it conveys more "high mountain" than Lake Ercina. 📸 Very photogenic: especially with light fog, at dawn, or after rain. 🚶♀️ Accessible: it can be enjoyed without long hikes.
