At the time of my visit, intensive work was underway in the heathland itself (not on the adjacent path) involving three to four heavy vehicles. I have the impression that larger bogs will be created here than before.

The only remaining old oil mill in Limburg. It's also remarkable that this watermill is the only one of the six remaining water-oil mills in the Netherlands to house both a corn mill and an oil mill under one roof. Source: https://www.leumolen.nl/leudalmolens/index.html

The Leudal is a 900-hectare nature reserve consisting primarily of forests with scattered grasslands, fields, and patches of heathland. Three streams flow through the area: the Leubeek, the Zelsterbeek, and the Haelensche Beek; for this reason, the Leudal is also known as the "Three Rivers Land." Approximately 500 hectares of the area are managed by the Dutch Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer). Source: https://www.leumolen.nl/Entree/Start%20Leumolen/DeLeumolen.htm

At the end of the 20th century, the bell rope was removed because visitors couldn't resist ringing the bell. As a result, the bell's disappearance wasn't even noticed until 2007. During the restoration of the bell tower in January 2008, a new bell was installed, and the bell rope has also been returned. More stories about the watermill can be found at https://www.leumolen.nl/Entree/Start%20Leumolen/DeLeumolen.htm

The terrain in Leudal is wonderfully varied and generally gentle, making it ideal for families. While some paths might follow 'hollow paths' carved by streams, most routes are well-maintained and suitable for a relaxed family outing.
Yes, Leudal has many excellent circular routes that are perfect for families. For example, the Leubeek – Leudal Nature Reserve loop from Leudal is an easy 6.3 km walk that allows you to explore the beautiful nature reserve and stream valley. Another great option is the St. Elisabeth Mill – Heathland Near Heythuysen loop from Leudal, which is about 5.1 km and passes by historical sites.
Leudal's trails are rich with natural beauty and historical points of interest. Families can enjoy discovering the unique Litsberg Sand Dune, exploring the serene Leudal Nature Reserve, and visiting historic watermills like the Leumolen (St. Ursula Mill) or the St. Elisabeth Mill. While many trails are easy, the varied terrain with stream valleys, forests, and some 'hollow paths' means not all routes are perfectly smooth for standard strollers. However, many wider forest paths and sections through meadows are generally accessible. For the best experience with a stroller, we recommend checking individual route details for surface information or opting for trails specifically marked as accessible.
Leudal is a nature-rich area, and many trails are dog-friendly. However, as it's a nature reserve with diverse flora and fauna, it's always best to keep dogs on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Please check local signage for any specific restrictions in certain areas.
Yes, parking is generally available at various starting points for trails throughout Leudal, often near visitor centers or popular attractions. In spring, you'll see rare plants like marsh marigold and forest anemones blooming, and the deciduous forests come alive. Autumn offers stunning foliage colors. Summer is also great, especially along the shaded stream valleys, and winter can provide a peaceful, crisp experience, though some paths might be muddy.
Absolutely! Leudal offers charming spots to refuel. A popular choice is Café Busjop, which is often a starting or ending point for hikes and is known for its local stories and hospitality. You'll find other cafes and restaurants in the villages surrounding the nature reserve, perfect for a post-hike treat.
