If you've ever tried planning a hiking trip around Chiricahua Peak, you know how quickly the options can feel overwhelming. With so many trails to choose from, it's tough to tell which routes are genuinely worth your time and effort, and which are just filler. That's where we come in. Our komoot community has mapped, ridden, walked, and reviewed countless routes here, and we've distilled all that local knowledge into a curated shortlist, saving you the guesswork.

Hiking around Chiricahua Peak means stepping into a true "sky island" — a unique mountain range rising dramatically from the desert, famous for its "Wonderland of Rocks." Expect to be surrounded by thousands of towering rhyolite pinnacles, columns, and spires, alongside diverse ecosystems ranging from high-elevation pine forests to scenic canyons. The trails offer everything from easy strolls to moderate family adventures, but for the most comfortable experience, we recommend visiting in spring (March–May) or fall (September–November).

If you only do one hike, make it the Heart of Rocks from Echo Canyon Trailhead. This 8.0-mile (12.9 km) moderate route is a showstopper, leading you right into the core of the monument's most iconic volcanic rock formations. For a shorter, easier option that still delivers on scenery, the Echo Canyon to Visitor Center Trail, at 4.1 miles (6.6 km), offers gentle gradients through stunning canyons. With more than 400 hikers already exploring Chiricahua Peak using komoot, you're in good company.

The Echo Canyon to Visitor Center Trail offers a remarkable descent through Chiricahua National Monument's iconic "Wonderland of Rocks." You'll wind past thousands of volcanic rhyolite pinnacles, through the narrow, arching passages of the Grottoes, and into the lush, shaded woodlands of Echo Park, where you might even spot a small waterfall. This easy 4.1-mile (6.6 km) hike, with a minimal 96 feet (29 metres) of elevation gain, takes just under two hours, making it an ideal way to experience the park's diverse landscapes.

Most hikers prefer to take advantage of the seasonal shuttle service from the Visitor Center up to the Echo Canyon trailhead, turning this into a predominantly downhill journey. During winter, higher elevations can experience snowy and icy conditions, so check weather conditions and wear appropriate footwear.
