Recently resurfaced; it's now a wider, top-quality gravel road. Beautiful scenery!

Status May 2025: A new top layer has been applied to this road. The characteristic deep ruts have disappeared, but the new top layer does consist of large, sharp, loose stones. Don't put too much pressure on the tires, otherwise it will bounce. Edit October 2025: The stones have now been broken in somewhat, and the bouncing is somewhat less.

After this road was completely washed away by heavy rain in 2024, the entire section was resurfaced in August 2025! It's now driveable again.

2025: Still well doable by gravel bike (even with bikepacking equipment). Just consider the potential of mud in case of heavy rain prior to your ride :)

The part of this segment on the Groenenweg (in NL) is on a top quality gravel road, the part towards/in Belgium is on a much bumpier cart path (but with beautiful views).

Ring positions, colloquially known as 'Tobruk', are field-based reinforced standard structures that were constructed by the Germans during the Second World War. They were built in large numbers mainly on the Atlantic Wall, the West Wall and on the Oder-Warthe-Bogen fortress front. Various types were constructed to accommodate machine guns, grenade launchers, tank turrets and smaller guns. All ring positions have a 360° field of fire in common, which distinguishes them from embrasure positions.

Limburg's terrain is exceptionally varied, even on traffic-free routes. You'll encounter everything from rolling hills and deep valleys, especially in South Limburg, to plateaus and characteristic 'hollow roads'. The surfaces range from gravel and dirt paths to some asphalt sections, offering a mix of challenges and scenic rides. Some routes, like the Evergreens – gravel climbs and descents in South Limburg, feature significant elevation changes.
While many of Limburg's gravel routes, particularly in the hilly south, can be challenging, there are indeed 'easy peasy' options designed for less technical riders. These routes often feature smoother gravel or dirt paths and fewer steep climbs, making them ideal for beginners or those seeking a more relaxed ride away from traffic.
Limburg's traffic-free gravel trails often lead through stunning natural areas. You can explore unique features like the terraced landscape of National Park De Meinweg, or the extensive fir forests and heather of Hoge Kempen National Park. Routes may also pass by the vast Maasplassen, the largest contiguous water sports area in the Netherlands, or distinctive marl areas and ancient sunken lanes. Don't miss the chance to see highlights such as the Vaalserberg Three-Country Point or the serene Reindersmeer (Reinders Lake).
Absolutely! Limburg is home to several national parks and unique landscapes that are perfect for traffic-free gravel biking. For instance, the Evergreens – gravel in and around NP De Meinweg route takes you through a unique terraced landscape. You can also find trails that combine the terrain of Hoge Kempen National Park with the Meuse floodplains, offering a mix of forests, heather, and water surfaces.
Yes, many of the traffic-free gravel routes in Limburg are designed as circular loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. This is convenient for planning your day and often provides a diverse experience without retracing your steps. An example is the challenging Limburg loop from Valkenburg.
Many popular starting points for gravel bike trails in Limburg, especially those near national parks or towns, offer designated parking facilities. It's always a good idea to check the specific route details on komoot for information on parking options at the trailhead.
Limburg has a reasonably developed public transport network, and some trailheads are accessible by train or bus, particularly those closer to larger towns like Maastricht or Valkenburg. However, for more remote traffic-free routes, public transport options might be limited, so planning ahead is recommended.
Yes, Limburg is known for its hospitality and culinary delights. Many traffic-free gravel routes pass through charming villages or near local cafes and restaurants, especially in areas with fruit orchards. You'll often find opportunities to stop for coffee, a local pastry, or a full meal to refuel during your ride.
Limburg offers a range of traffic-free routes, and many are suitable for families, especially the 'easy peasy' options with less technical terrain. Look for routes that are shorter in distance and have minimal elevation gain. The region's well-developed cycling infrastructure also includes unique experiences like 'Cycling through the Trees' in Bosland National Park, which can be a fun addition to a family outing.
The spring and autumn months are generally considered ideal for gravel biking in Limburg. Spring brings blooming orchards and pleasant temperatures, while autumn offers beautiful foliage. The Maas Valley is one of Western Europe's driest and sunniest regions, making summer also a good option, though it can be warmer. Winter rides are possible, but be prepared for potentially muddy conditions on unpaved sections.
The komoot community highly rates the gravel biking experience in Limburg, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Reviewers often praise the region's diverse and beautiful landscapes, the quiet and well-maintained gravel paths, and the challenging yet rewarding climbs and descents, particularly in South Limburg.
