THOMAS MANN MEMORIAL MUSEUM Thomas Mann, the famous German writer and Nobel laureate, spent three summers between 1930 and 1932 in his Nida summer residence. In 1933, the Mann family was forced to emigrate, and they never returned to Nida. The house was badly damaged in the post-war years, but was restored in the 1950s. The building was renovated in 1996. Today, the exhibition reproduces the life of the famous writer and reveals the atmosphere of the days he spent in his summer residence.

Birutė (1330-1382) was the Grand Duchess of Lithuania as the second wife of Kęstutis, Grand Duke of Lithuania, and mother of Vytautas the Great. There is very little known about Birutė's life, but after her death a cult worshiping her developed among Lithuanians, especially in Samogitia. Birutė was born in or close to Palanga to a Lithuanian, Samogitian or Curonian magnate family. The story of her marriage to Kęstutis became a romantic legend in Lithuania. The bronze sculpture of Birutė is near her presumed grave
